how to elope in Hawaii

So you want to elope in Hawaii?

I couldn’t be happier for you! Hawaii is one of the most incredible places in the world, and the perfect destination for an elopement. It’s the best place for a stress-free, relaxed day in nature that allows you to fully focus on your love. So whether you want to elope in the jungle, or out on a black sand beach, Hawaii is the place for the care-free adventurer.

The Ultimate Guide to Eloping in Hawaii:

  • Why invest in a photographer

  • How to plan your elopement

  • Best elopement locations

  • When to elope in Hawaii

  • How to get a marriage license in Hawaii

  • Elopement permits

So, why invest in a photographer at all?

Because you deserve it!

This is your wedding day after all, and your love story deserves to be told. You can have photos to share with friends and family back home, and to relive your adventure again and again.

But here is the important part…

If you don’t love being photographed, make sure you find a DOCUMENTARY STYLE photographer, who will make sure to eliminate those awkward poses, and make this day feel natural and fun. Look for someone who specializes in candid, organic photos that feel like they capture the emotions of the day.

How to get started

planning your elopement

1. Pick an island

2. Decide what time of the year you want to get married

3. Book your photographer (bonus if they are an elopement planner like me!)

4. Fill your perfect day with fun adventures

5. Apply for a marriage license

6. Book your plane ticket and accommodations

7. Get a location permit (or your photographer will for you)

8. Pack!

Choosing the best island for you

Every island in Hawaii has a unique geography, vibe and culture. Make sure to pick one that speaks to you!

Big Island

For the rugged adventurer, this is the largest island and has the most diversity! You can travel to a black sand beach, white sand beach, or a rare green sand beach. Volcanoes National Park is also on the island, with deep jungle and active lava flows. My personal favorite, and home, the Big Island has something for everyone.

O’ahu

For the classic Hawaii fans, this island is where it’s all at. Huge waves, world famous surfing, large white sand beaches, and tons of amenities, this island is for lovers of people, the city and luxury

Kaua’i

For the nature lovers, this island has dramatic cliffs, beaches and valleys! If you love to explore the jungle and dramatic natural landscapes, this one is for you.

Molokai & Lanai

For the minimalists, these islands are small, one-beach areas that are isolated and intimate. If you are looking for privacy and beauty all to yourselves, these are your islands.

Maui

Due to the recent fires and devastation, let’s allow Maui to recover before visiting!

When to elope in Hawaii

The best time to elope in Hawaii

Because each island experiences seasons

Although there is no bad time to visit Hawaii, it is worth noting that Hawaii experiences “wet” and “dry” seasons, which effect rainfall and weather conditions. Kauai is one of the wettest spots on the planet, so plan accordingly if you want a dry-er wedding day! (Although rainbows are amazing here too.)

The Wet Season

November-March

Often, the inner parts of the islands receive rain during this time. But don’t worry! If it’s raining in one place of Hawaii, it’s dry on the other side. And the coasts stay dry all year round. Winter is higher surf and rougher waves.

The Dry Season

April-October

Hot and sunny during this time of the year, with occasional rainstorms in the upper elevations. Based on trade winds, this weather can fluctuate. Summer is lower surf, and more exposed beachline!

Other amazing times to elope:

Humpback Mating + Migration

January- March peak season

Humpback whales journey to Hawaii to give birth and mate right off shore between Big Island and Maui! (Check out Hawaiian Adventures Kona for the boat trip of a lifetime).

Kilauea Eruptions

Timing varies

One of the world’s most active and visible volcanoes, Kilauea is an incredible sight to see! I’ve seen over 12 different eruptions in my life, and each one was unique and life-changing.

My favorite elopement

So, how do I get a permit to elope?

It’s easy, and important.

Permits make sure we are taking care of the natural land of Hawaii, and eloping in an non-impactful way. It also makes sure you have privacy and intimacy on your wedding day!

To Elope on a Beach: Apply for a Wiki permit.

To Elope in a State Park: Apply for a Special Use Permit.

Note about permits: Hawaii’s permit system is as on “island-time”, so make sure to apply for your permit well in advance due to wait times

Marriage licenses:

Getting your license in Hawaii is easy, and cheap! The fee is $60, and the permit can be applied for online before your wedding day, or in person. The license expires after 30 days, so make sure to plan accordingly.
